← Tenure by political system

An electoral democracy holds real multiparty elections that are mostly free and fair, so voters can genuinely change their government. What separates it from a liberal democracy is weaker guardrails: courts, media, and minority protections do not fully constrain those in power between elections.

Across the 54 electoral democracies, the current leader has been in office an average of 1,511 days (about 4.1 years).
